Description

Neat, silvery and wonderfully easy to place, Festuca glauca is a compact evergreen grass grown for its striking blue-grey foliage and tidy, rounded shape. It brings year-round structure to borders, gravel gardens and pots, and works beautifully as a soft contrast to flowering perennials and darker foliage. Though subtle, it has a very calming presence in a planting scheme, adding texture, colour and a gentle architectural quality without ever feeling heavy.

Why We Love It:**
Festuca glauca is one of those quietly useful plants that fits almost anywhere. Its cool-toned foliage is especially valuable for lifting hot planting palettes, softening stone, and bringing contrast to greens and deeper purples. It keeps a lovely domed shape and looks particularly effective repeated through a border or used to edge a path.
Perfect For:
  • Gravel and Mediterranean-style gardens
  • Edging paths and borders
  • Pots and containers
  • Coastal gardens
  • Low-maintenance planting schemes
  • Adding year-round texture and colour
Planting Notes:
Plant in a sunny, open position with sharp drainage, as Festuca glauca dislikes sitting wet through winter. It performs best in poorer soils rather than overly rich ground, which can make growth floppy. Comb through old foliage in spring with your fingers to remove any tired blades and keep the clump looking fresh. Divide every few years if needed to maintain a neat shape.
Caragh’s Garden Notebook:
This is a lovely grass for repeating through a scheme to create rhythm and calm. Try pairing it with lavender, salvia, nepeta or euphorbia for a soft, sun-loving combination, or use it alongside stone and gravel where its blue-grey tones really come into their own. Small but very effective, it’s a plant that earns its place quietly and beautifully.
