What are Agapanthus?

Agapanthus is a genus of perennial plants native to southern Africa. They are commonly known as African lilies or lily of the Nile. Agapanthus plants have long, strappy leaves and produce large clusters of trumpet-shaped flowers in shades of blue, purple, white, or pink. They are popular garden plants and are often used in landscaping as borders, mass plantings, or in containers. Agapanthus can be grown in a range of climates and are relatively easy to care for, making them a popular choice for home gardeners.

Types of Agapanthus:

1. African Lily (Agapanthus africanus) - Most common type of agapanthus and is native to South Africa. It has large blue or white flower clusters on tall stems.
2. Dwarf Lily of the Nile (Agapanthus praecox 'Minimus') - Contains blue or white flowers and is often used in rock gardens or as a border plant, only grows to approx. 12 inches tall
3. Queen Anne (Agapanthus praecox 'Queen Anne') - This variety has white flowers with a blue stripe down the center of each petal. It grows to about 2 feet tall and is a popular choice for cut flower arrangements.
4. Peter Pan (Agapanthus 'Peter Pan') - Contains blue flowers and is often used in containers or as a low border plant, only grows to approx. 18 inches tall.
5. Blue Storm (Agapanthus 'Blue Storm') - Contains a variety of large blue flowers. It is a popular choice for landscaping and can also be grown in containers, grows to approx. 3 feet tall.
6. Snowball (Agapanthus 'Snowball') - Contains white flowers. It is a good choice for borders or as a cut flowers, grows to approx. 2 feet tall.
