What are Berberis?

Berberis is a genus of shrubs and small trees in the family Berberidaceae. They are commonly known as 'barberry' and are native to temperate and subtropical regions of Asia, Europe, and North America. Berberis plants typically have spiny branches and alternate leaves. They produce small, yellow flowers in the spring or summer, followed by red or blue-black berries in the autumn. Some species of berberis have medicinal properties and are used in traditional medicine for various ailments. They are also used as ornamental plants in gardens and landscaping.
