What are Phormiums?

Phormiums are a genus of evergreen plants that are native to New Zealand. They are commonly known as New Zealand flax or harakeke. They have an exciting eye-catching foliage of many colour combinations. The flowers are very dramatic and tower above the mature plant.

Types of Phormiums:


1. Phormium tenax - also known as the common flax or harakeke, this is the most widely cultivated species of phormium. It has long, sword-like leaves that can grow up to 3 meters in length.
2. Phormium cookianum - also known as mountain flax, this species is found in the mountains of New Zealand. It has shorter leaves than Phormium tenax and is often used as an ornamental plant.
3. Phormium colensoi - also known as narrow-leaved flax, this species has long, narrow leaves that are often used for weaving.
4. Phormium ‘Bronze Baby’ - a cultivar of Phormium tenax, this plant has bronze-coloured leaves and is often used as a decorative plant in gardens.
5. Phormium ‘Yellow Wave’ - another cultivar of Phormium tenax, this plant has yellow and green striped leaves and is often used as a border plant in gardens.
