What are Photinia?

Photinias are low-maintenance shrubs or small trees, many of which have colourful  foliage displays in spring/summer or autumn which include small white flowers or red berries . They are often used for hedges, screens or ornamental plants in landscaping.

Types of Photinia:

1. Photinia x fraseri ('Red Robin'): This is one of the most well-known photinia cultivars. It has bright red new growth that matures to a dark green color. The contrast between the red and green leaves makes it a popular choice for hedges and ornamental shrubs.
2. Photinia serratifolia: Also known as Chinese photinia, this species features red or coppery new growth that eventually turns green. It produces white flowers in spring.
3. Photinia serrulata: Native to East Asia, this species has glossy, serrated leaves that start out red before turning green. It produces small white flowers in spring, followed by red berries
4. Photinia glabra: Commonly known as Japanese photinia, this species has glossy, leathery leaves that are dark green. It produces clusters of white flowers and small red berries.
5. Photinia davidiana: Native to China, this species has elliptical leaves that are initially bronze-red and then turn dark green. It produces white flowers and red fruit.
6. Photinia villosa: Also called hairy photinia, this species has red or coppery new growth that matures to green. It's known for its slightly hairy leaves.
7. Photinia serratifolia 'Pink Crispy': This cultivar stands out with its pink-tinged new growth, which adds a unique touch to landscapes.
8. Photinia x fraseri 'Little Red Robin': A compact variety of 'Red Robin,' this cultivar is ideal for smaller gardens and spaces.
